Happy Are You Who Are Poor In Spirit, Matthew 5:3-10

I have been enjoying our parish mission this week with our presenter, Fr. "Red" O'Reilly.  He is incredibly funny and really uses humor to make his spiritual points.  Last night he presented on 3 of the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-10) - but the first one really made me think.  "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Did you ever wonder what Jesus meant by this?  Father O'Reilly said Jesus was asking, "What are you chasing after in this life?"  Money, material things, status? Jesus says in the passage that follows the Beatitudes that where your treasure is, that's where your heart is (see my post "where is your treasure?"  Matthew 6:19-21)  He is saying give your heart to God or another person, not a thing.  Do you have room in your heart for what matters? Set your heart on those things that last, no those that can disappear.  Who will you give your heart to today?
